PIANO SOLO, more than just a record, will be a trip from Matos where gratitude, tributes to those who inspired him and a lot of flavor and Cape Verde belong.
From names like Codé di Dona, Dona Tututa, Luis Rendall or Boy G Mendes to authorial themes that have our music as roots, a common denominator throughout the album – the intensity and passion clearly audible in the 9 themes.
The musical tradition/memories of childhood when listening to our music in distant lands and the academy, are here clearly merged, in a continuous line that connects all the themes, making this work of a remarkable homogeneity. Matos’ signature is well stamped throughout the album and in each of the themes. The piano as an expression of Matos’ musical thinking. As he said in an interview, the option for the piano, as his main instrument, “because it gave him more scope to express his feelings for music”
The intention of the artist and conductor is clearly visible, in praising the instrumentalist as a leader. Here we see the instrumentalist who ceases to be just a musical accompaniment to become the leader of the work. He does it here, in a format that also pays homage to his usual musical instrument – the PIANO.
In a moment of complete intimacy, he gets involved with the piano to express the moment we were living (the confinement) to once again praise the positive moments. The solution would not be to stand still, but to focus on a new beginning. On the cover the symbology of this movement-life that continues in the rocks of Carbeirinho (São Nicolau)
The album was made during confinement, where the pianist said it was a time of isolation, but also of introspection. It was thus possible to almost transform the “stopped into the future” …or perhaps into a present-future and through music – his everlasting passion – to get feelings out: of gratitude, of homage to musical masters, of his relationship with time in a album that – by all indications will be remarkable in our music for being the first album by PIANO SOLO (also title of the work) with themes of music from Cape Verde.
It is also worth mentioning the production of the disc: the combination of Matosmusic and InSulada in an independent production.

Bem visível a intenção do artista e maestro, no enaltecimento do instrumentista enquanto líder.
